For anyone wanting to develop their full spiritual potential, Krishna consciousness, there’s nothing that compares with associating with devotees of Krishna. Plants grow best in fertile soil, and our natural spiritual consciousness grows when we keep company with spiritually minded persons. Krishna consciousness is contagious, and the more time we spend in the company of Krishna conscious people, the more likely we are to “catch” it.

Conversely, every aspiring spiritualist is advised to minimize their contact with worldly-minded, materialistic people who have no interest in spiritual life.

  • Finding Spiritual Friends
    – “Seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” – so it is with spiritual friendships.
  • The Importance Of Association
    – When we make contact with someone who is “on fire” with divine consciousness, our spark of spiritual potential comes alive.

We like to quote our sources. This page was inspired by the following:

  • Chaitanya Charitamrita, Madhya-lila 22.83: “The root cause of devotional service to Lord Krishna is association with advanced devotees. Even when one’s dormant love for Krishna awakens, association with devotees is still most essential.”
  • Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.11.48, Purport: “Lord Krishna clearly indicates that bhakti-yoga is the only real means to totally free oneself from material existence, and that bhakti-yoga is not possible without sat-sanga, or association with other Vaishnavas.”
  • Srimad-Bhagavatam, 4.24.59: “He whose heart is purified can see that the whole cosmic manifestation is but the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but he whose heart is contaminated sees things differently. Therefore by sat-sanga, or association with devotees, one becomes perfectly pure in heart.”
  • Srimad-Bhagavatam, 11.12.9, Purport: “Anyone who is favorably living with the Supreme Personality of Godhead becomes sat, or eternal, and thus the association of such a person can immediately award others pure devotional service to the Lord.”
  • Chaitanya Charitamrita, Madhya-lila 22.54: “The verdict of all revealed scriptures is that by even a moment’s association with a pure devotee, one can attain all success.”
  • Sri Upadeshamrita (Nectar of Instruction), Verse 2: “One’s devotional service is spoiled when he becomes too entangled in . . . associating with worldly-minded persons who are not interested in Krishna consciousness”
  • Sri Upadeshamrita (Nectar of Instruction), Verse 3: ” . . . principles favorable to the execution of pure devotional service (include:) abandoning the association of nondevotees, and . . . following in the footsteps of the previous acharyas (trustworthy spiritual authorities who practice what they preach). These . . . principles undoubtedly assure the complete success of pure devotional service.”
